BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- A Bluefield man was killed after he and police officers exchanged shots with each other on Tuesday morning.

Bluefield Police Chief Dennis Dillow told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that shots were fired as the man left First Community Bank on Tuesday morning.

Police said Cedric Maurice Williams, 33, of Bluefield, initially tried to rob First Century Bank, left a package there and then fled to the other bank, which he then robbed.

State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said Williams was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a handgun.

He said he didn't know yet who fired first, but that should be determined as the investigation progresses.

"We haven't even begun to do all the interviews on that," Baylous said, noting that officers still were determining whether the package contains an explosive.

Police detained a second person originally described as a suspect, but later cleared that person of involvement.

No one other than Williams was injured.

A bomb squad examine the package left at the bank in Bluefield.
