A 41-year old Charleston man purposely threw hot coffee in his mother's face, severely burning her, police say.

Michael Brian Jones is charged with malicious wounding. He allegedly splashed a half-full pot of coffee in his mother's face on Thursday, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate court.

His mother received third-degree burns on the right side of her face, the complaint says. After she was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Hospital, she had to be taken to a burn unit.

Jones was still listed as an inmate at South Central Regional Jail on Tuesday. Magistrate Joe Shelton set bail at $10,000 cash.
