MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A former Berkeley County sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to two years in prison in an assault case involving his wife.

The Herald-Mail reports 44-year-old Robert L. Lippman was sentenced Tuesday in Berkeley County Circuit Court.

He entered an Alford plea in February to two counts of domestic assault and six counts of domestic battery. An Alford plea means a defendant does not admit guilt but agrees the prosecution has enough evidence to get a conviction.

Assistant Prosecutor Timothy Helman said Lippman choked his wife and jammed the barrel of a gun into her chest.

Lippman's wife said Tuesday she wanted her husband to get counseling and didn't want him in prison. The newspaper says she was removed after interrupting Helman as he addressed the court.
