A Beckley man was charged in connection with a violent armed robbery that occurred earlier this week at a Charleston motel.
Shaun Andre Jones, 43, of Grady Avenue, turned himself in to Charleston police Thursday after learning officers had a warrant for his arrest, said Dwight Staples, an attorney representing Jones.
Jones is charged with first-degree robbery and malicious wounding, both felonies. He appeared Thursday afternoon in Kanawha County Magistrate Court before Magistrate Ward Harshbarger.
Charleston police were called Tuesday to Red Roof Inn in Kanawha City, where a man had been shot and stabbed. James Braxton was found in a motel room with two gunshot wounds and a stab wound. He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital where he made a brief statement to police, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.
Braxton told officers he'd been in the room with a woman named Heather, who then let Jones and two others into the room. She then ran from the room, Charleston Detective J.L. Doughty wrote.
An argument between Braxton and the men ensued. Braxton said he and Jones had been arguing over stolen money. It was then, he told officers, that he was shot and stabbed.
About $600 was taken from Braxton's wallet, which had been hidden under a bed, according to the complaint.
Braxton identified Jones as one of his attackers and told officers Jones was driving a brown GMC Rocky Ridge, documents show. He also disclosed Jones' address.
Doughty was contacted later that evening by State Police, who found a revolver covered in blood on Interstate 64 south near mile marker 94.
Doughty collected the gun as evidence and noted a piece from the weapon's trigger guard, that should have held a laser, was missing. A broken part of a laser bearing a Ruger logo was found in the motel room, the complaint states.
Beckley police contacted Charleston officers after finding the vehicle Braxton described on Grady Avenue. Officers obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and found blood inside the vehicle.
"The investigation is still very active and we anticipate filing additional charges," said Lt. Steve Cooper, Charleston's chief of detectives.
Jones was being held Thursday evening at South Central Regional Jail. His bail was set at $100,000 cash only.
