Police and a dispatcher say an Ohio man allegedly stole an SUV at gunpoint from a woman in Weston in Lewis County Thursday afternoon and then was involved in a crash with that vehicle that killed a married couple later that afternoon in Whitehall in Marion County.
Ryan Hubbs, 33, still was at United Healthcare Center in Harrison County when he was served with a warrant for armed robbery, according to a Marion County 911 dispatcher who said she didn't know the extent of his injuries. She said she didn't know the identities of the husband and wife, whom she said where declared dead at the scene of the crash between the allegedly stolen Honda CR-V and the couple's Chevrolet Malibu sedan.
She said the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of W.Va. routes 73 (Middletown Road) and 250 (Whitehall Boulevard).
The Weston Police Department, according to a post on its Facebook page, responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Weston Rite-Aid around 12:30 p.m. The responding officer allegedly found a GMC Sierra truck that had been stolen from Ohio, and at the same time received a call about a suspicious person in the area of Rite-Aid and CVS.
While responding to that call, a woman allegedly told the officer her car had been stolen at gunpoint, and a statewide be-on-the-lookout notice was issued for the Hubbs and her vehicle.
The Weston police said Hubbs was found with a handgun at the time of the crash. The department's post didn't state whether officers were in a vehicle pursuit of Hubbs at the time of the crash.
Hubbs now is in North Central Regional Jail.
