Two Logan County students have been arrested this week for threatening statements about their schools, according to police.
A student at Chapmanville Regional High School was arrested on Thursday for saying he had a hit list, and a Logan County middle school student was arrested on Wednesday for writing a threatening note in hopes of getting out of class, police said. Both were charged with making terroristic threats.
Officers didn't actually find a hit list created by the Chapmanville student, said State Police Sgt. R.L. Frye.
Frye said the student, who he believed was a sophomore, was in a juvenile hearing Thursday afternoon.
Frye said arresting students for making threats is not a new strategy, but that students making threats is becoming more common.
Trooper First Class T.D. Boggs said authorities made the arrest out of caution more than strong belief that the student would have carried through.
"I wouldn't call him a threat," Boggs said. He said he believed bullying had been the motivation.
Wednesday, a sheriff's deputy responded to a complaint at Man Middle School at about 10 a.m., according to a Logan County Sheriff's Department news release.
Police said they read a threatening note inside a book in one of the classrooms. The school resource officer contacted the sheriff's department after finding the note.
Sheriff's deputies, school officials, and members of the State Police bomb and K-9 unit searched the school but found nothing.
The investigation is complete.
