WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - A former Wheeling police lieutenant has been sentenced to probation in a case in which he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student at a school where he worked.
Phil Redford, 43, pleaded guilty Thursday in Ohio County Circuit Court to one felony count of possession of material depicting a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Under a plea agreement, Redford must register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victim for three years. Redford and the victim previously told the court they were engaged. She attended Thursday's hearing.
According to a criminal complaint, Redford was head of security at The Linsly School last year when he began the relationship with the girl. She is now 18.
Redford originally was charged with felony sex abuse.
