Two people were arrested by Boone County sheriff's deputies Thursday after a Peytona man was killed the day before.

Racine residents Mitchell Hughes, 25, and Brittany Thomas, 22, allegedly conspired to kill James "Gumby" Smith, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

On Wednesday, Hughes reportedly drove into Smith on Toney's Branch Road. According to the release, both Smith and Hughes had intimate relationships with Thomas in the last several months.

Hughes and Thomas remained at Southwestern Regional Jail on charges of murder and conspiracy Friday morning. Their arraignments were forthcoming.

Anyone with information about the case can leave a tip at 304-369-7387.

"Our deputies have put in a lot of work over the last 24 hours and we hope this will help bring some comfort to the family in this tough time," the news release said.
