The Transportation Security Administration recently announced it found 82 guns in travelers' carry-on luggage across the nation between May 15 and May 21, one more than the record set in August 2016.
More than 60 of the guns were loaded, and 18 of the firearms had a round in the chamber, the organization said in a May 25 blog post.
Days after the announcement, on May 29, officials confiscated a .22-caliber revolver from a woman's backpack at the Huntington Tri-State Airport, according to a news release.
Police confiscated the gun and then cited the woman - a resident of Floyd County, Kentucky - with a weapons charge, the release states.
Officers also confiscated a knife at Yeager Airport during the record-breaking week.
Neither guns nor knives are allowed in carry-on bags, but both can be transported in checked bags. Guns, firearm parts and ammunition must be declared.
Guns are required to be unloaded, placed in a locked hard-sided case and packed away from ammunition, according to the release.
Passengers who bring a gun to an airport checkpoint could face criminal charges and a fine of more than $10,000.
"Just because we find a prohibited item on an individual does not mean they had bad intentions; that's for the law enforcement officer to decide," the national agency said on its blog. "In many cases, people simply forgot they had these items."
