A tractor-trailer hauling about 2,300 piglets overturned on Interstate 77 near Princeton on Thursday afternoon, a Mercer County dispatcher said.
Around half of the piglets in the incident were injured or dead.
Local packing plants and community members with trailers helped to take the pigs away. Pigs have to be quarantined at a U.S. Department of Agriculture holding facility.
Both northbound lanes of traffic were reopened and traffic is moving slowly, after lanes were closed and traffic was at a standstill. A traffic sign read, "Livestock on roadway," according to West Virginia 511.
