A Randolph County nurse was sentenced to jail, probation and ordered to pay restitution after she was convicted of Medicaid and other fraud, according to a news release from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Mary Jane Brown, of Belington, was convicted of Medicaid fraud, financial exploitation and fraudulent schemes in Randolph County Circuit Court, and will serve at least one year in jail before her probation and restitution begin.
She was sentenced to serve one year in jail for financial exploitation and two consecutive terms one to 10 years in prison for the charges of fraudulent schemes and Medicaid fraud.
The prison sentences will be suspended once she is release from jail. After her release from jail, Brown will serve seven years on probation, which is when she is to begin paying restitution, according to the DHHR release.
During the course of four years, Brown, a social worker at an Elkins nursing home, financially exploited 13 patients, stealing more than $50,000 from them. She also caused more than $40,000 in fraudulent claims to be submitted to Medicaid, according to the release. She was arrested in July 2014.
The total loss to the victims and Medicaid was $97,264.59, according to the release.
Brown's activities were investigated by the DHHR's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
