Leaked fuel on Interstate 64 near Charleston Area Medical Center's Women and Children's Hospital prompted a closure of the road for about three hours Monday evening.

At about 7:45 p.m., Charleston police were dispatched for a vehicle crash with injuries near the hospital. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle that had crashed into the nearby retaining wall, and saw diesel fuel on the road, said Charleston Cpl. Brian W. Jones, of the Traffic Division.

Charleston firefighters helped close the portion of the interstate, which was closed for about three hours while Division of Highways workers applied sand to the road to soak up the diesel fuel, Jones said in a news release. The interstate was reopened after 11 p.m. Monday.

The driver of the tractor trailer that was leaking, Melvin Hendren, of Indiana, said he lost about 50 gallons of diesel fuel when an object struck his fuel tank. The truck is owned by Mister P Express from Jeffersonville, Indiana.

The driver of the vehicle, Jacob Moore, of Charleston, was not injured.
