MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - The Monongalia County prosecutor says a grand jury has found that no criminal charges should be brought against two sheriff's deputies involved in the fatal shooting of a woman during a pursuit.
Prosecuting Attorney Marcia Ashdown tells the Dominion Post that the grand jury isn't recommending criminal charges in the June 5 shooting of 45-year-old Christie Cathers. The deputies' names were never released.
They had been placed on administrative leave, but were cleared to return to work in July after a review found that they didn't violate department policy.
The deputies were responding to a report of someone brandishing a knife when Cathers attempted to flee. Police say she drove her vehicle toward a deputy and struck the sheriff's cruiser. Deputies fired into the moving vehicle, killing the woman.
