Two people were injured Monday afternoon when a rock fell on them in the woods of Boone County, according to county 911 dispatchers.
Dispatchers said the two victims were in the woods for an unclear reason when they started a fire under a rock overhang, and a roughly 80-ton rock fell and struck them while they were underneath.
About 2:40 p.m., one of the victims, a 22-year-old man whose name hasn't been released, called to report the incident. He was transported by ambulance to Boone Memorial Hospital. Another male victim, whose name and age haven't been released, was also hospitalized.
Dispatchers said the injuries occurred near Lauren Circle near the unincorporated community of Wharton. State Police are investigating, though the investigating officer wasn't immediately available for comment Monday evening.
