BARBOURSVILLE -- Shots were fired in the parking lot of a Barboursville Walmart Saturday evening, after shoppers who got into a fight inside the store took the scuffle outside.
Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas said the incident happened outside the Walmart on Nichols Drive, not inside the store, adding that some had "wildly speculated" that an active shooter had been inside the store.
"None of that was accurate," McComas said.
The occupant of one car had fired at another, McComas said, but no one was struck. Officers working on the scene were able to identify both cars involved through Walmart security footage, and as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday, officers with the Huntington Police Department had pulled over and questioned the passengers of the car that was shot at, McComas said.
The sheriff's department has tentatively identified the passengers in the other vehicle, but has not released any names in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
