Mount Hope police shot and killed a man on Monday night, according to State Police.

The man allegedly brandished a gun "in the direction of the approaching officers," said Cpl. J.E. Kincaid of the State Police. Kincaid was relaying information from a press release written by Sgt. K.D. Horrocks, commander of the Oak Hill detachment.

Mount Hope police shot several rounds at the man in the front yard of his Mount Hope residence after he refused to drop his gun and brandished it in their direction, Kincaid said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were responding to a report of an intoxicated man who had been in an incident of domestic violence involving a knife.

State Police Senior Trooper J.M. Maynor and Senior Trooper B.K. Smith arrived at about 11:30 p.m., after Mount Hope police. While responding, they were told the man had possibly cut another man's throat and stabbed a woman.

Both stabbing victims were taken to Raleigh General Hospital and were being treated for injuries at the time of the press release.

A 3-year-old child was removed from the man's residence and placed in the custody of child protective services in Fayette County.

Police said they were not releasing names of the man shot or the stabbing victims until family members are notified. They have also not released the name of the officers who shot the man.

State Police is investigating the shooting.

Calls to Horrocks; Fayette County Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth Campbell; and Mount Hope Police Chief Mark Larkin have not been returned.

State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous and an employee of the Mount Hope Police Department sent news releases identical to the release written by Horrocks, but did not provide any additional information.
