Two men from South Carolina allegedly fled police on the West Virginia Turnpike Wednesday morning, then one of them injured himself when he jumped off a bridge in an attempt to escape.

State Police attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding in the Marmet area at about 10:30 a.m., according to a dispatcher for the Parkways Authority.

The men fled, side-swiped another vehicle near Cabin Creek, then exited the turnpike at Chelyan and either crashed or stopped the vehicle, the dispatcher said. The man then jumped about 20 to 30 feet off a bridge, in the direction of W.Va. 61, not the water, and injured his leg. He was taken to a local hospital.

The men were likely fleeing because of the crystal meth found in their vehicle, Cpl. R.A. Spearen said.

Charges are pending.

The driver of the vehicle that was side-swiped is fine, the dispatcher said. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
