Charleston police have identified the woman who died after her vehicle plunged into the Elk River on Wednesday.
The driver was 80-year-old Charleston resident Peggy Ann Jarrett, said Sgt. Mark Kinder in a news release Thursday.
Kinder said witnesses reported seeing Jarrett speed eastbound through the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Westmoreland Drive, then through the parking lot of Appalachian Tire Warehouse. Jarrett's 2009 Chevrolet Impala then landed in the Elk River.
When the Charleston police and fire departments arrived on scene, first responders found her vehicle completely submerged.
Kinder said that, due to cold conditions and limited visibility in the water, it took divers several hours to pull Jarrett from her vehicle.
She was taken to CAMC General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
