Gunfire struck the rear window of a vehicle on Charleston's East End and a house in the 900 block of Hazelwood Avenue, also in Charleston, overnight Sunday, according to authorities.
A Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatcher said a caller reported a vehicle being struck by gunfire at about 11:20 p.m. in the area of the McDonald's on Washington Street East.
Charleston police Lt. Steve Cooper said numerous rounds were fired from what police believe was an AR-15. He said police believe the incident occurred in the area of McClung Street and Sidney Street.
"We have collected shell casings and are still down in the area trying to find witnesses and what the motive is," he said Monday afternoon. "Fortunately nobody was hurt."
Cooper also said people living in a house at 901 Hazelwood Ave. called 911 when their home was struck by gunfire overnight Sunday.
He said police believe 18 to 24 rounds were fired into the home. People were home at the time but no one was injured.
"There's no evidence that would indicate that any of the residents of the home were involved in any criminal activity," Cooper said. "I don't know if the wrong house was targeted, but there was no apparent motive for this. We're just very happy that no one was injured."
He said the residents have lived in the home for several years.
