Two brothers allegedly broke into their step-grandfather's Charleston home Thursday, beat him up and took their 1-year-old stepbrother because they believed he was living in unsafe conditions.
Khance Xavier Johnson, 18, and J'Hahn Bazzil Johnson, 20, are each charged with burglary, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.
They allegedly kicked down the front door and destroyed the door frame of the house at 1411 3rd Ave., on the city's West Side.
The brothers said they believed the child was living in dangerous conditions, but police and Child Protective Services found no reason to remove the child from the home, Charleston police Lt. Steve Cooper said.
Cooper said the brothers' complaints were vague but that they might have believed the child was being neglected.
The brothers drove the boy to a West Virginia State Police detachment, where troopers called Charleston police, Cooper said.
The two brothers live together on Kentucky Street, in South Charleston. Neither has a criminal record in Kanawha County.
Magistrate Michael Sisson set bail at $50,000 for each of them. The two still were in jail on Monday. Court records do not list an attorney for either.
They declined an interview request through Ashley Bennett, a spokeswoman for the West Virginia Regional Jail & Correctional Facility Authority.
