A former employee of Fairness West Virginia was arraigned and released on bail after appearing before Magistrate Kim Aaron on Wednesday.

Travis Crum, who was accused of embezzling money, a felony, from the civil rights advocacy organization in an April 21 criminal complaint, was released on an $8,000 personal recognizance bond.

The 27-year-old allegedly wrote and cashed several unauthorized checks, totaling $6,059, to himself from Fairness West Virginia.

It is unclear whether Crum turned himself in on Wednesday or was arrested by authorities.

Fairness West Virginia is a nonprofit advocacy group dedicated to the fair treatment of the LGBT community.

At the time of Crum's arrest, Andrew Schneider, the group's executive director, declined to comment until an arrest had been made "so as not to thwart the efforts of local enforcement."

Initial calls to Schneider went unanswered Thursday morning.

Crum, who worked for The Charleston Gazette before joining Fairness West Virginia in 2014, is no longer employed by the nonprofit organization.

He is scheduled to make his next appearance in court at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28.
